Today is #GivingTuesday, an event launched by charities and celebrated across the globe, in hopes of encouraging a day of giving and volunteering. While so many Americans take advantage of the deals available during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, nonprofit associations tapped into the momentum of these events to create Giving Tuesday in 2012. The day serves as a reminder of what we have to be thankful for and to keep our minds on the cheerfulness and tenderness of the holiday season, something that can be quickly lost in the hustle and bustle of long lines and deal grabbing.
At Halifax Habitat for Humanity, we are working with you and others in our community to ensure that everyone has a decent place to live. Together, we’ve built 121 new Habitat homes and 15 renovations. We’ve helped 136 families and over 350 children. All successfully by coming together as a community.
What is most remarkable about the Habitat for Humanity program is that it is not a free program. Donations of money and time help families break the cycle of poverty and build long-term financial security. The families who join our program invest hundreds of hours of volunteer labor – “sweat equity” – toward their own homes and the homes of others. They become our greatest advocates and bring other families to the program. They also must prove financial responsibility and pay a monthly mortgage. We place their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Habitat that is used to build more houses. Your support today can help us do more in all the many ways that Habitat builds.
