Do you have an old or unneeded car, truck, boat or other vehicle sitting in your driveway, or taking up space in your garage? Consider donating it to Habitat for Humanity through Cars for Homes.
How donating a vehicle helps Habitat.
Why should you consider donating a vehicle? The most important reason is you will be helping Habitat provide decent, affordable housing to a family in need. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the sale of your donated vehicle will be used by YOUR local Habitat affiliate to build and repair affordable homes.
What happens to donated vehicles?
After a vehicle is donated to Habitat, it will be sold through a national network of diverse venues on behalf of Habitat for Humanity. Even if your car isn’t in very good shape, or even if it doesn’t run at all, you can still donate it to your local Habitat for Humanity. If it is inoperable, it will be taken to an auto salvage yard. There, all reusable car parts, batteries, tires and fluids are removed. Then the vehicles are crushed, shredded and recycled into steel. Recycling steel is great for the environment because it uses less energy and natural resources and produces less carbon pollution. Also, a huge amount of steel is kept out of landfills – enough to build nearly 45,000 steel-framed homes every year. Just the energy itself saved each year is enough to power about 18 million households.
Your donation will help the environment because keeping an inefficient older car off the road helps save gas and improves air quality. In fact, 30 percent of vehicles donated to Habitat are recycled for materials or sold for reusable parts.
Your donation may be tax-deductible.
Another great reason to donate your vehicle to Habitat for Humanity is your vehicle donation may be tax deductible. Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and contributions including vehicle donations may be eligible as deductions on your federal tax return.
